About the Story

Our play,”Peter Pan,” is based on the book by J.M. Barrie, but that book was actually originally a play! You can read the book online.

Barrie first wrote about Peter Pan in a short story called “The Little White Bird” (1902). He made Peter the lead character in his play “Peter Pan; or the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up,” which was produced in 1904.

Although “Peter” is “the boy who never grew up,” the role has traditionally been played by a woman. In the first production in 1904 “Peter” was played by an actress named Nina Boucicault.

“Peter Pan” is a beloved idea that has been the basis of many books, shows and movies – musical and non-musical. Just in recent years:

* “Pan” (2015) a film starring Hugh Jackman

* “Peter Pan Live” (2014), based on the stage musical and performed live on television

* The characters of “Peter Pan” and “Captain Hook” were central characters on the television show “Once Upon a Time.”

* “Peter and the Star Catchers” is a five-book series by Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry that tells of the origins of Peter and new adventures

* The first book in that series was adapted into a play that won five Tony Awards

* A film called “Peter Pan and Wendy” starring Jude Law as “Captain Hook” is currently in production
