Matilda is a show that was written to be performed with British accents. Many of the phrases are used are uniquely British. For example, even though the Broadway production changes the term to “gas” in the script we’re using it’s referred to as “wind.”
Actors should work on their British accent outside of rehearsal.
Most characters will speak with an “RP” or Standard British Accent. Click here for a great video to help you learn quick tricks for this dialect. (PLEASE NOTE: There is word discussed that may be considered off-color by some, but it’s a word used also in Shakespeare and the musical Peter Pan.)
